Mad Max: I AM FURIOSA!!!

Mad Max Eimear Coghlan A head with style
After the release of Mad Max Fury Road had us all sitting anxiously on our hands with bated breath, I decided to take matters into my own hands. It’s been just over 2 weeks since my 7hr operation (double mastectomy, reconstruction & removal of lymph nodes); I’m a Chemo Queen and I am Furiosa, helping women escape the cage of beauty ideals. The future of our sisterhood lies in the support we show each other as we create our own definition of beauty. The richness of our strength glistens from the flame within.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, even more so when there are captions underneath! So I’ll let the photos do the talking…..

Recreate Furiosa’s Look for Halloween or a Fancy Dress costume

Outfit:

  • White top from Primark (Pennys) for £5: Stain in tea water, rinse, then rub in used coffee grounds. Using a needle and thread string it up to create ruffles. With a sponge smear the Grimas black make-up (detailed below) all over the top
  • Sleeveless black leotard, black trousers, black boots, black shrug to wrap around neck and swimming goggles
  • 5 various Men’s belts in Primark from £2 – £4 each  and my own leather satchel
  • Chained belt: Using three belts to create one belt, I clipped in the middle a silver bracelet from Primark (in a set for £2). I deconstructed 3 necklaces (£2 each Primark) to use the chains and attached them to the bracelet. Using the pendant from one of the necklaces, I turned it backwards and attached to the middle of the bracelet.

Make-up:

  • Black “Instant Colour Hair Spray and Wash out”: Spray all over the head.
  • Grimas Water Make-up (PURE) Black 101: With a wet sponge apply only on the front part of the head and face and smear along arms
  • MAC Black Matt Eyeshadow & Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner 24H 01 Black: For the eyes
  • Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Radiant: Apply this oily gel with your fingertips over the black on the front of your head, face and arms to recreate the oily look

    1. Thank you so so much!!! I think it’s evident how much fun we had!!! Thankfully a builder let us in to use the demolition site as our background!! I don’t think he was impressed when we then came in with a bazooka!! I’ve given the make-up products above. It so fun to make myself as dirty as possible!! hahahah

Nice costumes. I have seen Maxie tomorrow so i am fresh in, does it take a long to prepare this look?

    Liked by 3 people

    1. Why thank you!! It didn’t take long, or perhaps I was enjoying it too much to notice!! For me, my look is described above, it was recreating the top that probably took the longest. Making the belt chain was easy and fun, once you had what you needed. Rachel (the red head) had cool army gear so she brought the cool army jacket and gas mask that Frankie (Immortan Joe) is wearing. I took the grey tube out of his vacuum cleaner and stuck inside the straps of the gas mask to create the tube look that comes out. Rachel cut up t-shirts and made a chastity belt out of handbag chain straps. For the background, we went to a car scrap yard and discovered it was now a construction site!! It helped having Rachel dressed the way she was as the builder boss allowed us to go in and have a photo shoot there! It was a demolition site and we were very lucky they hadn’t knocked down that cool graffiti wall. Then on the way home, I spotted an old van parked outside of a cafe so that was perfect for the vehicle background! I based the story above and quotes on the trailer, so don’t know if my story is even correct!! But I think I have the general gist of it!! Did you love the movie? I have to get to a cinema pronto and watch it xx

Thanks, interesting. So if am i right, did you choose Mad Max because of interesting look? (or are u fan of old movies??) Sorry for my first comment (it was made by mobile phone and autocorrection 😦 ) Anyway, i have seen movie yesterday. I think, your story is ok (only guitare shall not be in hands of Joe 😀 ), but it is definitelly worth of it – to see movie at cinema. Movie is not so deep but it is full of action and without some unreal fails. Good luck with your next costumes 😉

      2. Yep I choose Furiosa for not only the look but also what she represents. She’s a woman with a shaved head and an amputated arm yet (from what I saw in the trailers) her inner strength roared like a lion. To me that’s beauty. In the trailer I saw a guitar with flames blasting out of it from one of bad guys on the back of a truck, so I thought we would funk up Immortan Joe a bit with it!! hahah

  30. Lol..I can’t believe that you actually did a photo shoot with all that make-up. It would have been an interesting experience for you 😀
The richness of our strength glistens from the flame within. Love this line 🙂

    1. hahah thank you Aniket!! And poor Charlize having to do most of the movie with it on!! Actually it was grand and didn’t bother me at all. Someone stopped me and asked whether it was tattooed on!! It was super fun doing it! Especially as builders had stopped working to video us and they thought it was hilarious!! I’m delighted to hear that you like that line! You definitely have the look. Holly wood has not really had a new idea in 20 years. Bad sequels, prequels and reboots are said. I like the cast in this and it was a bad original so it should surpass the original

I disagree with wwwpalfitness in only one instance… the original was pretty cool. Cant wait to see this reboot of the old classic.
Of course, when I do watch it I will only see you, and these images, in the matching scenes 😉

Indeed, a picture is worth a thousand words. I couldn’t as well agree more to your proposition that women need to create their own definition of beauty. Incredible photography and costume, I should admit. Thank you for sharing your feelings in the making of Mad Max.

    1. thank you for your very kind words! indeed, women have been trapped in their own perception of what beauty should be, conditioned by the never ceasing media images we are bombarded with. Since losing my hair to chemo, I love my bald head so much, that now it’s growing back i’m keeping it nearly bald! It has made me stand out and I love it!! Everyday beauty can be so boring, uniqueness is what catches the eye xxx
